Wordiness is when a writer uses too many words or meaningless complex sentence structures intentionally or unintentionally. Wordiness is a common essay writing mistake that reduces the coherency and quality of your essay. Wordiness in sentences clutter your writing and take away the clarity of your essay. Just because you have added more words in your article doesn’t mean that you have added meaning. Perfect writing is direct and straightforward since it uses as few words as possible to convey the same purpose.
- Write concisely
Writing a concise essay is using as few words or information as possible to present an idea or argument. Reading wordy or very long sentences can be exhausting, confusing and annoying. Very long sentences can be hard for readers to identify the main points making it difficult to understand the point you are trying to communicate. Readers end up frustrated when trying to identify critical points in very long sentences or paragraphs. Writing in a concise style requires you to write accurate and specific information.
- Get rid of meaningless words
When writing or after writing, it’s crucial to eliminate words that create wordiness in sentences. Therefore, it’s essential to remove additional details. Remove words that are less effective or less relevant to your main ideas or thoughts. Unnecessary words and phrases that don’t add any meaning or support your main points make your work crammed up and wordy.
- Eliminate redundant pair of words and phrases
Redundant words are unnecessary since it repeats the meaning of the other name. Writing a concise essay requires one to avoid many pairs of expressions that imply each other. Examples of redundant words that create wordiness include; the result, history, essentials, gifts, and others. Redundant phrases include red in colour, large in size, round in shape, and others.
- Be specific
Many writers veer off the main points with needles and additional information that undermines the clarity and purpose of their content. Using specific and relevant language will help you stay on point and focused on your writing. Moreover, sticking to the central ideas or concepts will keep your readers engaged and focused on your content.
- Eliminate filler words
Filler words add no meaning or value to a sentence, and their primary purpose is to fill space. Filler words make your writing too long making your reader feel bored and disappointed. Examples of filler words include: very, really, needless to say, for what it’s worth, in my humble opinion, among others.
- Avoid overusing qualifiers
You can reduce wordiness in sentences by using strong and descriptive adjectives. Strong adjectives are adjectives that are used to replace using very + a normal adjective. Strong adjectives are used to describe the qualities of something. Weak adjectives are not clear about the noun they are representing. Examples of replacing a weak adjective with a strong adjective include; very upsetting-devastating, very beautiful-gorgeous, very scary-horrific, and others.
The key to composing a concise essay is to stay on point and deliver your content using the fewest but relevant words.
- Use active voice rather than passive voice.
A passive voice creates sentences in which the subject noun receives rather than doing the action, and the doer of the action is not stated. Passive voice often creates sentences that are unclear and less direct, whereas active voice creates sentences that are clearer and more concise. Active voice is vital in identifying who or what performs the action.
- Edit and proof-read your essay
Editing and the proof-reading process is crucial since it will help you get rid of wordiness in sentences and paragraphs. Check and get rid of all the words that don’t add any meaning to your essay. Find and replace phrases that are repetitive or vague without changing the purpose of your sentences.
