How To Write A Great Expository Essay

An expository essay is one that requires a student to investigate a topic, explain, clarify, or expound on the idea clearly and concisely. Generally, an expository essay is based on a five-paragraph format. The format includes a one-paragraph introduction, three main points that make up the body, and a one-paragraph conclusion.

Characteristics of expository essays

  • Clear, concise, and defined thesis statement

A clear and well-defined thesis statement is crucial since it summarizes the main ideas of the essay and states the importance of the essay. A weak thesis statement often lacks focus and becomes ambiguous.

  • A smooth and logical transition between the introduction, body, and conclusion

Logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusions help the readers to understand the relationship between the ideas and the logical flow of your thoughts.

  • Body paragraphs that include facts and evidence

Expository essays use facts and evidence to support a claim or argument. Supporting evidence proves a claim or argument is valid hence improving the credibility and reliability of the information presented in the essay.

  • A relevant conclusion

Expository essays must include a conclusion that readdresses the thesis statement with the evidence provided. The conclusion must not include new ideas but highlight and re-affirm the main ideas presented in the body of the essay.

Types of expository writing

There are different types of expository essays that include:

  • Definition essays- explain the meaning of a word, term, or concept.
  • Classification essays- narrows down a broad idea into categories or groups.
  • Compare and contrast essays- describes and shows the differences and similarities between two or more subjects.
  • Cause and effects essays- describe and show how things affect and depend on each other.

Guidelines for writing an expository essay

Choose your topic

The best way to start writing an expository essay is brainstorming for ideas and choosing a topic you are interested in and familiar with. This will make it easier and more comfortable to find and research information. An excellent expository topic should be based on current and trending events. The topic should be specific enough that you can find enough information and supporting evidence to describe and explain the topic thoroughly.

After choosing the topic, you should narrow the focus to a specific aspect of the topic so that you can explore it in detail. Narrowing down a topic will provide you with a particular organization of your paper and the research you will undertake.

Write the introduction

Your introduction should draw the attention and interest of the reader. Sentences should be clear, concise, and engaging. A good introduction provides background information on the topic. Background information is crucial as it provides the reader with critical information and knowledge about the subject.

Background information helps the reader to understand the focus, nature, and scope of the research problem. After writing the background information, you should include a thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph. A good thesis statement narrows down the topic to a specific focus of an investigation and highlights the purpose of your paper.

Write the body of the essay.

The body of your essay should consist of at least three paragraphs. Each of the paragraphs should be limited to the presentation of one main idea. This will ensure your article is clear and easy for the reader to follow and understand. Outline your main points and present the relevant facts and supporting evidence. The main ideas or points should be backed by facts and evidence in the same paragraph. The main ideas presented in your essay should relate to the thesis statement highlighted in the introduction.

Concluding the essay

A reasonable conclusion leaves an immediate impression on the mind of the reader. Conclude your essay by emphasizing on your main ideas and restating your thesis statement in a short summary. However, a reasonable conclusion should not just restate the thesis but show its significance. Your conclusion should recommend actions to be taken and provide solutions to an issue or problem.
