Section III: Evaluative Essay Questions (50 points) You must choose three of the five essay questions listed below to answer. Each answer should be a minimum of 250 words (remember minimally meeting assignment requirements is C level work!) and should provide a detailed explanation of your thinking and reasoning. When appropriate you must (properly) cite course texts; however, your answer should primarily be in your own words. Answers which can make accurate, logical, and smooth connections to unlisted key course terms or themes will receive extra credit. 16. First, (a) explain the significance of the following statement: “global media [are] ‘the new missionaries of global capitalism’” (Lule, 104). Next (b) discuss the consequences for-profit media have not only on economic but political and cultural globalization using an example to illustrate. And, finally, (c) assess the effects of relying on for-profit media to produce and circulate information and cultural products globally and (d) what this means in terms of how people should approach their media consumption. Be sure to mention at least six problems with media oligopoly in your answer. 17. There is no denying that power differentials and extreme inequality characterize modern processes of globalization. First, (a) highlight the most important of these differentials and inequalities when it comes to media. Second (b) use the example of the internet to evaluate both the potential and the limits of new media in overcoming or cementing those differentials and inequalities. In your answer (c) be sure to discuss at least five effects of the commercialization of the internet. 18. When describing the importance of the printing press as a form of media that drove globalization Lule explains that the press actually “changed the nature of knowledge … by preserv[ing] knowledge which had been more malleable in oral cultures … [and] standardiz[ing] knowledge, which had become more variable as it spread orally across regions and lands.” He also explains that the press “reconfigured power and people … [which] helped give rise to modern nations” (62-63). Discuss how (a) social media has driven and shaped globalization by (b) changing the nature of knowledge and (c) reconfiguring power and people. Another way to think about this is how social media platforms don’t just deliver content (i.e., discourse), but that they can and do influence the nature of that content. 19. Discuss (a) what the role of global media is in the construction and negotiation of identity and culture (this could refer to an individual’s sense of self, group norms or values, ethnic or racial group identity, national identity, nation-states, etc.). Be sure to (b) reference relevant thinkers and use an example to help explain your thinking. 3 20. Using an example of your choice, explain how (a) ideoscapes relate to the histories, legacies, and ongoing structures of Euro-American colonialism and imperialism as well as (b) how ideoscapes interact with media- and technoscapes such that the particular interests of Western/hegemonic nations are presented as general interests (i.e., global, neutral interests) in global media. Lastly, (c) discuss how hegemonic ideologies are challenged in the context of global media. Be sure to mention any relevant concepts and/or thinkers.
